Philadelphia Robotics Coalition provides high-quality out-of-school-time robotics programming at under-resourced schools. We have a vision that every Philadelphia public school student will have access to a high-quality robotics program in their school or community, and we are actively working to expand our programming. We aim to provide pathways for low-income youth of color to pursue college and careers in the rapidly growing STEM sector.
Our current Strategic Plan revolves around a central question: “How can the Coalition use robotics programs to drive equitable STEM education for Philadelphia students?” It comprises 5 core strategies: 1) Empower student leadership, 2) Strengthen the Coalition’s mentorship ecosystem to support students’ career readiness, 3) Support schools in sustaining and growing their robotics teams, 4) Elevate the Coalition’s profile as a STEM education advocate, and 5) Expand operational capacity.
As we expand our programming, we are also growing our fundraising capacity and professionalizing our operations to ensure long-term stability and widespread impact. We maintain a portfolio of more than 30 grant opportunities from regional and national foundations, and seek to increase individual giving and corporate sponsorships.
ABOUT THE POSITION
We are looking to hire an Executive Director who is passionate about STEM education and youth development to lead our organization during this crucial growth stage.
The Executive Director will provide leadership and oversight for the full spectrum of organizational life. They will establish a shared vision for equitable STEM education and collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement strategies in support of that vision. The Executive Director will lead a staff of 2 full-time Program Coordinators and one part-time Event Director, and maintain relationships with contracted services, including bookkeeping, grant writing, payroll, and tax preparation.
Job responsibilities include:
- PROGRAMMING (approximately 60%):
- Sustaining and growing programming in ways that align with our strategic priorities;
- Building relationships and maintaining partnerships with the School District of Philadelphia, schools, partners, peer organizations, and others who participate in our programming;
- Managing program staff, including mentoring early career staff and providing professional development opportunities;
- Collaborating with program staff to rebuild robotics teams post-pandemic, recruit new teams, and expand our mentorship network;
- Connecting with day-to-day programming by visiting afterschool programs and attending workshops and events;
- Communicating internally and externally to share the impact of our programs and build awareness about the Coalition’s work; and
- Representing the organization publicly and remaining well-informed about education, technology, and engineering sectors.
- FUNDRAISING (approximately 20%):
- Developing strategies and tactics to expand contributed revenue and ensure a robust fundraising platform across multiple sectors;
- Soliciting and stewarding individual donors, corporate sponsors, and institutional funders;
- Managing annual campaigns for individual giving and corporate sponsorship outreach;
- Reviewing grant applications and reports and generating support materials as requested by the Grant Writer; and
- Engaging the Board of Directors as ambassadors for the organization.
- ADMINISTRATION (approximately 20%):
- In collaboration with the Board of Directors, managing the budget, Bookkeeper, payroll service, and Tax Preparer to ensure fiscal health and remain compliant with IRS nonprofit requirements;
- Overseeing administrative needs related to office space, insurance, etc.; and
- Hiring additional staff as needed and implementing equity-focused HR policies and practices.
Job responsibilities are likely to shift as the organization grows. In all aspects, the Executive Director must prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion across people, programs, and policies.
The position requires an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to community-building. Candidates should have experience with youth development programs, STEM education (familiarity with FIRST robotics a plus), and/or Philadelphia public schools. The ideal candidate will be able to provide leadership, while also facilitating effective teamwork and collaborating with the range of stakeholders in our ecosystem. They should be the kind of person who likes to do a “little bit of everything.” The candidate must have experience building new programs and processes, and be able to coordinate multiple tasks while also meeting deadlines and maintaining accuracy. They should enjoy thinking strategically and creatively. They must have prior fundraising experience, management experience, excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent computer skills, and comfort with budgeting and bookkeeping. Post-secondary educational experience (degree/s, coursework, certificate program, etc.) and at least 5 years work experience in the nonprofit sector preferred.
Salary range is $70,000-$75,000, based on experience, for a full-time exempt position. Benefits include health insurance, disability insurance, retirement contribution, and family leave. The Coalition has offices in a coworking space in Center City, Philadelphia. The Executive Director may establish a schedule of office hours, work-from-home hours, and on-location hours for the staff team as appropriate for the workload and circumstances. Position requires being present in Philadelphia and able to travel around the city to visit schools. Some evening and weekend availability is required. Clearances/background checks are mandatory, per Pennsylvania school laws. Target start date is August 15, 2022, to coincide with the start of the robotics season.
ABOUT THE COALITION
Philadelphia Robotics Coalition provides high-quality out-of-school-time robotics programming at under-resourced schools. The Coalition was established in 2016 by a group of high school students to address funding disparities and the lack of robotics programs in Philly schools. In 2018, the Coalition launched as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. We have a vision that every Philadelphia public school student will have access to a high-quality robotics program in their school or community, and we are actively working to expand our programming.
Our mission is to build an ecosystem that supports the next generation of STEM and community leaders through skills development, collaboration, and mentorship. We seek to foster equity and diversity within STEM education, and create a learning environment for underserved youth that will lead to lifelong success. We aim to provide pathways for low-income youth of color to pursue college and careers in the rapidly growing STEM sector.
In 2021-2022, the Coalition ran 52 afterschool robotics teams serving 600 students in grades 2-12 across Philadelphia. We are working to expand to 75 teams serving 1000 students by 2024. Coalition teams participate in the FIRST curriculum, which is a highly regarded progression of robotics challenges from elementary through high school. Robotics is an inherently student-centered, hands-on learning model. Students develop technical STEM skills in engineering, computer programming, and applied mathematics, along with valuable life skills of leadership, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and computational thinking.
The School District of Philadelphia (SDP) is our primary programming partner. Within SDP, 87% of students are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and at least 65% live in poverty. Of the Coalition’s robotics teams, 74% are located at schools where at least 80% of students are classified as economically disadvantaged; for 34% of our teams, the rate is 100%. Approximately one-third of Coalition participants are girls/women, and we are working to increase that percentage to 45% by 2023.
The Coalition’s programming includes:
- Administering out-of-school-time robotics programs, including an 8-month afterschool robotics season (during which teams meet 1-3 times/week) and week-long summer camps;
- Covering costs for supplies, tools, and registration fees to ensure under-resourced schools may fully participate in regional and state competitions;
- Providing training and year-round support for school teachers who serve as coaches;
- Launching new teams at under-resourced Philadelphia schools and community centers, working with each site to reduce barriers and create meaningful engagement;
- Engaging youth in leadership opportunities through Coalition events, our monthly Student Advisory Council, and summer camp counselor positions;
- Recruiting and training local STEM professionals to serve as mentors for youth;
- Offering career exposure opportunities that introduce students to possible career paths; and
- Hosting workshops, competitions, and STEM events open to all city robotics teams.
Coalition robotics teams have competed in regional, state, and world championships. Each year, 4-5 high school teams qualify to compete at the Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge Championship and 5-7 elementary and middle school teams qualify to compete in the FIRST Mid-Atlantic FIRST LEGO League Championship. In 2021, the team from Academy at Palumbo won first place in the CoderZ Pro League World Championship, beating a team from Russia in the final match.
Applicants will work alongside Coalition staff members to supervise and mentor a small group of middle school students. Students will learn to build and program LEGO robots. They will be using the 2021-2022 FLL Challenge field and rules, so familiarity with this year’s game is a plus.
